Dunton No-masts Campaign
Defending our health and environment.

We asked Local Plannning Authorities to state their policy with regard to masts on land they own

Name of Local Authority Policy Regarding Masts Comment
Bedford Borough Council "That in the light of public concerns about the effects of electromagnetic radiation on public and personal health, this Committee (as landowner) opposes in principle the use of Borough Council land and property for the placing of new telecommunications equipment" - Environment Committee 26/1/00. The Resources Committee on 3/2/00 resolved to endorse the decision of the Environment Committee. This seems to be the gold standard among local councils
South Beds District Council "As land owner the Council will not normally allow its land to be used for telecommunications installations. An exception to this policy may be considered in a case where use of council land would obviate the need to use a more intrusive site outside the Council's control" - Executive Committee 19/09/00. Sensible and pragmatic
Mid Beds District Council "MBDC resolved to consider any application to install apparatus (telecommunications masts and antennae) on Council-owned land on its own merits." - Estates Surveyor 6/10/00. Which means?... We were assured verbally that they wouldn't let one be erected within 2M of your house. Very comforting.
Beds County Council "That any request to erect a telecommunications aerial mast on any County Council owned building or site be determined by the current users of that building or site, but that the Council make available a model risk assessment to assist in considering such requests." - Council's Committees in June 1998. A bit of a cop-out? We are concerned since they own much of the land around Dunton.
